Cataract in Newfoundland Dogs

Dear President of the Newfoundland Dog Club of the Netherlands,

I am vet at the institute of animal genetics at the University of Bern, Switzerland and I take contact
with you today regarding a health problem we encounter here with the Newfoundland dog.
During the last two years, we observed several cases of congenital cataract in our country. This
disease appear between five and eight months with both eye affected. The affected dog have a
decreased vison and the lens have to be removed with a surgery. The eyes of the affected dog are in
general too small for a prosthesis what lead to a reduced quality of life.
With the support of the Swiss Newfoundland dog club, we started a genetic project and we are trying
to elucidate the origin of the problem. It seems that this form of cataract have a recessive mode of
inheritance (like cystinuria). Such disease are a tragedy for the dogs and the breeders as it is not
possible to identify the carriers. Our objective is to develop a genetic test for these animals to
exclude future cases of congenital cataracts in Newfoundland dog.
Our project have made nice progress during the last months. However, we are now looking for cases
who are not related to the Swiss one to confirm our findings. May I ask if you heard about such cases
in your country? To our knowledge, you have introduced a mandatory eye examination.
Here the link about our project:
